A popular design element in midcentury modern architecture is the butterfly roof. It’s perhaps a little more common to find this feature on commercial structures than on residences. And I’m not sure why that is because I, for one, love the look of it. I especially like it when the roofline is punctuated not merely by alternating up and down slopes, but when each slope includes the opposing line beneath it, creating the appearance of elongated diamonds – a very Googie sort of feature. This home in in the Linda Vista neighborhood of Pasadena is a fine example of that.
