There is a little string of chic mid-century homes along Solar Drive, the short spur at the top of Nichols Canyon. In January, the Warshawsky Residency (1961) by Volker Traub was sold for $890,000. Although that needed quite a bit of updating, it was still a terrific price. Now, right next door, is the "Sunbow House", by Val Powelson. This home has a lot of "cool" factor going for it, not the least of which is the "butterfly roof" design. This style of roof is not uncommon in Los Angeles, but it's usually on commercial buildings, not residences. A fine example is the Chase Bank on Sunset Boulevard right down the hlll from this house.
Built in 1960, it's undergone renovations in recent years, including the floors, kitchen, and baths. All quite tasteful. According to the listing, the work was done by Steven Kent A.i.A. The essence of the design, though, has been preserved as you'll see in the photos below.
